At Algonquin College, the centre providing services to students with disabilities is called the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL). The Centre for Accessible Learning is the primary place to find out about all of your disability related needs.

Transition Programs

Algonquin College offers multiple transition programs for students with disabilities called Level Up Your Learning - Preparing for the Fall Semester, and Strategic Learning in the College Environment (SLICE). Algonquin College also offers additional services (prior to and during first year) for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through their Transition Support Centre for Students with ASD, located at their Woodroffe campus.

Support Services Available

Health Services

Algonquin College provides confidential, student-centred health services. At the Ottawa and Pembroke campuses, the clinic is staffed by family physicians and registered nurses. The Perth clinic is run by a nurse practitioner. 

Counselling Services

Algonquin College offers Counselling Services at the Ottawa, Pembroke, and Perth campuses for any student who may be experiencing stressful events in their life. Throughout the academic year, counselling services offers seminars and workshops in various areas of study skills such as: managing stress and test taking skills.

Academic Support

The Student Success Specialists provide resources for students to support their academic and personal goals.  The Student Learning Centre (SLC) on Ottawa Campus provides support for students in English, math, and computer skills, and additional services such as one-on-one or small group coaching.  Peer Tutoring is available for students who are having academic difficulties in their program. Support is also available from Student Success Specialists at the Pembroke and Perth campuses. 

Library Services

Algonquin College has libraries at their three main campuses. Each library offers various resources for students including databases, journals, e-books, and e-videos.

  • The Ottawa Campus Library is partnered with the Student Learning Centre, which provides coaching services and help in English, mathematics and computers and peer tutoring.
  • The Kathleen and F. Allan Huckabone Library at the Pembroke Campus provides resources for students with disabilities in their AT meeting room, as well as the Student Support Lab, where all students can receive help in English, research skills, mathematics, science, and computers.
  • The Perth Campus Library offers services for students including study rooms, loan of computer equipment, and audio-visual equipment.

Academic Advising

Algonquin College offers academic advising services to students such as: guidance on course selection, understanding program requirements, navigating one's options after a failed or poor grade in a course, and switching programs.

Algonquin College's Financial Aid office offers a range of  financial assistance which consists of merit-based scholarships, need-based bursaries, and awards based on academic achievement. Residence and Housing

On-Campus Housing

Algonquin College’s Residence Life Office offers suite style residence accommodations for students at the Woodroffe campus. Application for residence occurs on a first-come, first-served basis until all rooms are filled and remaining students are placed on a waiting list. Suites include 2 private bedrooms, a shared washroom and a shared kitchenette. A virtual tour of a sample room is available. Building amenities include:

  • Common lounges
  • Common Study areas
  • Movie rooms
  • Access to a 24/7 front desk
  • Maintenance
  • Laundry facilities

All rooms come furnished and include internet, local telephone service, and cable television. Residence rates vary per year and term. Meal plans are a mandatory additional cost and operate on a declining balance system. Payment plans are available for residence fees.

Algonquin College offers several barrier-free rooms for students requiring special accommodations.  Additionally, Residence Attendants and personal care services (non-medical assistance) is available 24 hours a day for 8 month terms for students with physical disabilities living on campus. Students who require special accommodation are required to submit documentation during the residence application and to contact the Centre for Accessible Learning on campus.

Getting Around

Campus Accessibility

Algonquin offers Campus Maps & Directions information for each campus as well as a Parking Map for the Ottawa campus.

Ottawa Transit

OC Transpo is comprised of buses, and a rail system called O-Trains. Students at Algonquin College can purchase a discounted pass. Routes and maps are provided for each of the OC Transpo options.

Accessibility

The OC Transpo buses and O-Trains offer accessible transit services including low-floors and next stop announcement system.

The OC Transpo offers the Support Person and Attendants which allows users of the transit system who require a support person to have this person travel with them at no additional cost.

Para Transpo is a service that provides door-to-door accessible transit for persons who are unable to take conventional transit due to a disability. The OC Transpo has established eligibility guidelines for the use of Para Transpo. Persons seeking to use Para Transpo must submit an application form signed by a health practitioner.
